2006.4.23    Naomi SATO attended the open course lectures "Science and Buddhism Series"
Naomi Sato attended the "open course" lectures "Science and Buddhism Series" on April 15th. This was the first of the "open courses" held at Ryuunji Kaikan under the auspices of the Tokyo Zen Center.

Professor Dr. Shizuka SASAKI (Hanazono University) lectured on:
"Theories of evolution and Buddhistic cosmology". Various theories of evolution, including the preliminary Darwinian theory, were explained in an understandable way. Professor Sasaki suggested that the goal to which Science aspires conforms to the truth which Shakyamuni had communicated, so that it is now a very appropriate time to learn about Buddhism.

The transcript of this lecture with its questionnaires can be seen at the following URL:

On Usage of "spirituality" in the context of Japanese Media
We find various references to "spirituality" not only in religious context but also other "secular" ones. For instance, databases of such references as PsycINFO show recent drastic increase. My study is to itemise the very areas of the increase based on the research of the usage in periodicals widely to show the connotation of the term among common folks in Japan.

People who share their fragility:Alcoholics Anonymous'making of universal vocabularie
This is an analysis of the community consciousness of Alcoholics Anonymous, a self-help group movement for the people who hopes to stop drinking. The point of this paper is to show their elaborated vocabularies to encourage the members to share their fragility--shortcomings. Sharing fragility also works for the group cohesiveness and in turn to keep their sobriety.
